Vacations are never complete until you get to see something extraordinary. One of
the hottest things to see is how the rich and famous have lived. If you aren't
one of those blessed ones - with the last names of Hearst, Rockefeller or Vanderbilt,
(don't worry - neither are we!) we are going to cover one of the best mansions
on the American soil and the best way to reach them...
Kykuit in Sleepy Hollow, New York
Known as the Estate of John D. Rockefeller, it tops the list of best mansions ever
made on earth. The Estate was built by the oil tycoon and a great philanthropist
John D. Rockefeller (Senior), and his son. It is enriched with marvellous art pieces
collected by generations for the family.
As one of the eminent private residence, the Rockefeller Estate has over 40 bedrooms
and is home to the 10 Rockefeller families. This stone mansion was built by the
renowned architects - William Adams Delano and Chester Holmes Aldrich. Located 25
miles (42 km) north of New York City, this rambling estate covers a total area of
about 3,500 acres and is described as a self-contained world.
There's a strong resident workforce of gardeners, security guards, laborers,
and the cultivators that take care of cattle, farming and food supplies. There's
a nine-hole golf course that housed, at one time, seventy-five resident buildings
and private roads leading to them, most of which were designed artistically designed
by Rockefeller Sr. and his son, the 41st Vice President of United States and 49th
Governor of New York.
Visiting Hours
The Rockefeller Estate opens from May to Nov for public viewing, though not all
the sections can be accessed. The visitor centre opens at 9:00 every day, except
on Tuesday. Visitors can call at 914-631-8200 Monday through Friday or 914-631-3992
on weekends to get more information.
