In our quest of finding the zoos that redefine the recreational activities for children
and adults, here are the rest of them:
Bronx Zoo (Bronx, New York)
With over 4219 animals in 532 species, the Bronx Zoo connects people to the wild.
The zoo was open to public in late 1800s, and it is the biggest metropolitan zoo
in the United States covering an area of over 265 acres. The icons range from replica
of African savanna, Tiger Mountain, which was created to accommodate a pack of Siberian
tigers, and the nearly 7 acre Congo Gorilla Forest, made famous by the movie Congo.
The Watani Grasslands Reserve, famous for its natural wild elephant habitat appeal,
is the best elephant habitat all over the globe. Owned and supported by the Wildlife
Conservation Society (www.wcs.org),
the Bronx Zoo has always been admired for its environmentally friendly practices
and never dying commitment to "keep its own backyard green". Authorities have adopted
plenty of energy efficient methods in their official buildings, promote recycling
programs, and educate public on the other eco-friendly technologies available in
today's market.
Audubon Zoo (New Orleans, Louisiana)
Charming mix of the old and new, Audubon has over 1700 animals in 300 species. Located
in uptown, the zoo dates back to the late 19th century, and has the heritage you
can't miss to notice while you are here. The old architecture stands tall among
the long stretches of park and its woods. The most popular exhibit in Audubon is
the Swamp that has world renowned white alligators. Supporting them are two majestic
white tigers that keep the visitors remain interested in the zoo, long enough to
visit it time and again. Other attractions of the zoo include a large aquarium filled
with a number of variety fishes.
Cincinnati Zoo (Cincinnati, Ohio)
A huge zoo with plenty of "best of..." records to its name, this Cincinnati based
zoo along with Botanical Garden hold an honored place in zoo history of United States
as the second zoo to open its doors to the public after Philadelphia Zoo in 1875.
Cincinnati Zoo has vast collection of rare species and plants, including reptiles,
white leopards, Indian rhinos, biggest lions, cheetahs, African gorillas, and Brazilian
ocelots. It also runs a successful breeding program for animals that has earned
it its unofficial nickname "The Sexiest Zoo in America".
So the next time you leap out of the way of a mouse, take few seconds to appreciate
that our country ranks at lowest on the "native animals that can kill you" scale.
Sure, we have them all - polar bears, reptiles, huge spiders, snakes, and skeletons
of those who lived thousands of year ago but the chances of a human getting hurt
by these are almost nil.
