The Civil War, which was fought between 1861 and 1865 made some sites historically
spectacular. If you haven't been here yet, we suggest planning a visit and remembering
those brave men who sacrificed their lives to let our days sparkle.
First Battle of Bull Run
Summer of 1861 saw the first major battle at Manassas, Va. Although
everyone anticipated it to get over within 30-40 days, it was fought for much more
time than that. Bull Run now is a beautifully restored battlefield. Commemorating
the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, special events are being staged throughout
2011. Manassas has also been named the eminent tourist destination in the United
States for 2011 by the American Bus Association for its efforts
in highlighting the impact of the Civil War. Its proximity to Washington DC makes
it easy to combine with other important Civil War sites including the White House,
Arlington National Cemetery and Ford's Theatre.
Battle of Shiloh
Also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, it was a major battle
in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, fought for two days (April 6-7,
1862), in southwestern Tennessee. On a spring morning, the battle commenced from
6:00 am, leaving the petals of the trees raining down on the living and the dead
as it raged. Now, its developed into a very lovely spot that is tough to imagine
was the site of some of the worst carnage of the war.
Antietam
Fought on September 17, 1862, it is sometimes referred to as Battle of Sharpsburg
(Sharpsburg is the place where the battle actually took place). It was the first
time the South fought a significant military battle in the North. There were over
25,000 casualties leaving mass despair to deal with the dead. The site is now preserved
and stands a strong testimonial to the years gone by.
