The legend is that the McElwee family lived near the McElwee Road in the late 1800's.
The household had enormous wealth that it made from the railroad industry. The couple
had a son and were expecting another child. However when the new born died as soon
as he was born, the mother blamed their first child for that. Not able to take the
blame, Jacob (their son) drowned himself in the pond behind their home and the mother
hung herself in grief. After this tragic incident, the father couldn't dare
to live in the house again and decided to tear it down. During the deconstruction
of the mansion, the workers accidentally destroyed Jacob's grave stone. However,
they were never able to find the body. After the mansion was gone, a road was put
up going directly through where the great estate once stood and the road was named
McElwee, in memory of the family.
There are stories in the neighbourhood and people claim to have seen the boy pointing
to his grave. Others say they hear noises every night around the pond in which he
drowned to death. If you have never taken a trip to a haunted road then this is
a great place to begin your adventure. You can
rent a car, drive along the Hartford Road in Moorestown, New Jersey and
take a left on McElwee if you are going from Route 130.
Turn down the street and go a little beyond to see the family pond on left (the
place where Jacob drowned). Go further left to pass through the field where the
McElwee mansion once stood and where Jacob's body was said to be buried but
never found. If at this point your hairs do not rise, drive along the road that
goes directly through the property to see if you find something strange.
