Although the name 'Hell Creek Formation' doesn't necessarily incline someone to
think of it as a destination to visit during holiday, its experience is quite the
opposite. Noted by some as the one of the most adventurers' destinations in
Montana, Hell Creek Formation has successfully kept the dream of a
naturalist alive. Twice the size of any other national park in the country, it feels
a hell of a lot wilder as well.
You can be out there in the Hell's Creek and feel quite removed from the city. Even
the insects have settled into the utter wilderness (they're not at all dangerous,
by the way). Hell's Creek begins at the Potomac's east bank near Georgetown
and extends to and beyond the northern city boundaries. The whole province spreads
across a wider area, including some parts of North Dakota,
South Dakota and Wyoming.
Hell Creek Formation in reality is a series of fresh and brackish-water clays, sandstones
and mudstones deposited during the Maastrichtian Age by rigorous
activity in the river channels and deltas, with occasional wet swamp deposits along
the low-lying eastern Seaway. The climate was mild and with no prolonged annual
cold, thin but distinctive marker bedding formed near the formation's uppermost
strata, thus making it more of a geological term than a place. It actually is a
geographical state of the region, and has remains the same since long.
Interestingly, it is also one of the premier excavation sites for the induction
of dinosaur fossils into the ever thrusting commercial market.
The region is known for its sharpened dinosaur teeth and fragments of an ancient
reptile called the crocodylian osteoderm. Some other notable fossils include different
invertebrates, mammals, plants, reptiles and amphibians.
One of the most interesting fun facts for the place is that despite its existence
as a freshwater habitat, plenty of shark teeth have been found in the region, suggesting
that these deep sea creatures could once survive without saltwater.
