In the previous post
we discussed getting to Grand Canyon through helicopter and plane. This post will
highlight another way to get there - by road. Driving on the route to Grand Canyon
from Las Vegas allows more privacy and flexibility than a commercial tour, in addition
to making it possible to visit either rim. Here are few pointers that you can consider
when deciding which rim to visit:
The North Rim
is the favorite of many. It's not visited by many tourists making it lesser
crowded than south, where you can't move without elbowing your way to the overlooks.
The drive through Zion National Park on the way to Canyon offers splendid views.
The North Rim is closed in winter.
The South Rim
is open all year, attracting over 5 million visitors in a year. This is because
of its easy accessibility and availability of all the amenities. Earning the distinction
as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the South Rim features astounding views
of nature's majestic art. During summers, expect heavy traffic and busy parking
sites. If crowd is what you want to avoid, visit the Canyon during November to February
if high altitude and heavy snow is not your consideration.
To drive till Grand Canyon from Las Vegas, start early if you wish to reach back
the same day and have the will power and stamina to drive for twelve hours. Leaving
Las Vegas at 6:00 AM and returning as 10:00 PM leaves you enough time (almost 4
hours) to see, drive and peer over overlooks.
The best option is to stay at Canyon for a night which will allow you to enjoy all
the sights at the leisurely place and a wonderful chance to see the mighty Canyon
at sunrise and sunset.
