Isn't the very mention of the word 'cemetery' enough to send chill down
the spine? Not if you ever visit some of the best maintained cemeteries in United
States. Here's a small description of the one visited most often:
Arlington National Cemetery
Website: www.arlingtoncemetery.mil
Location: Arlington, Virginia
If you ever get a chance to go to this historic cemetery, by all means, do so. It
will turn out to be an experience you will never forget. With the feel of fresh
grass under your feet, it isn't easy not to think about those brave men and
women who took pride in serving the nation.
Every year more
than 4.5 million people visit this unusual place that gets almost 30 burials (including
interments and inurnments) each day.
All of the headstones
at Arlington National Cemetery face east and have the distinguished Washington Memorial
in the background.
The cemetery
holds three special services each year - Easter, Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
Its cornerstone
contains a U.S. flag, an autographed picture of President Woodrow Wilson, and the
Declaration of Independence.
This cemetery
also has the last remains of crew members of the ill fated Space Shuttle Challenger.
Inside of the
cemetery is The Tomb of the Unknowns that has graves of four individuals who fought
in World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War.
Some of the other
notable figures buried here include former U.S. Presidents William Howard Taft and
John F. Kennedy, Glenn Miller (famous band leader), Abner Doubleday (Civil War general
and the brain behind baseball), Audie Murphy (most decorated U.S. combat soldier
from World War II), and Bill Mauldin (political cartoonist).
