It was 1848, when some peasants discovered gold in the mines of California, America
gained recognition around the European countries. That monumental discovery soon
started to attract thousands of young men who ventured across the unsettled continent
of North America in the search of their bright fortunes. Loudly known as the "forty
niners" in remembrance of the year of the great migration, these westward
immigrants were the ones to keep foundation of America we know today.
From that time till late 1890s, "the yellow metal fever" swept
across all the western parts of the United States of America. "Prospectors" hovered
the country in search of not only the gold but other precious metals as well making
states like California, Arizona, Nevada,
Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and
Montana hot destinations of their travel. One can still follow the
'gold path' through these states to get a feel of how those nineteenth century peasants
worked.
Each unexpected discovery drew masses of fortune seekers eager to earn profits through
the newly found riches. Within weeks, such sites used to get transformed into a
crowded, busy new camp of gold diggers and it just took few months for new businesses
to thrive with saloons, dance halls, stores and hotels. As a result, the population
of these gold towns swelled from few hundreds of inhabitants to
tons of thousands of them. The boom towns attracted a lot of country folks also
because of their flourishing local economy based on the riches extracted from their
mines. These towns witnessed the first hand growth in gambling, drinking and low-rate
entertainment which led to frequent brawls, gun fights, robberies and murders. Many
of the tales of the Wild West and the infamous outlaws, gunfighters and bandits
took place in these gold towns.
