If adventure and romance is on the agenda this winter, the wild fun at Minnesota
awaits you. Be it the 57 mile long Gunflint cross-country skiing, Brainerd Lakes
ice fishing, superior spa experience or small-town stopovers, Minnesota has a magic
that is hard to find anywhere else.
Known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the State technically has well
over 15,000. And when it gets chilly in winters, the local communities gather around
to celebrate the vivacious season of ice and snow.
Winter festivals across the state invite people to a wide array of fun. Luring folks
outside to play are the attractions like turkey bowling, polar plunges, and golf
on frozen lakes, racing beds and skiing. Sophistication gives away the way to silly
sports that take their place alongside traditional fun, like dogsled races, sleigh
rides and our favorite - chili feeds.
Though the festivities begin from as soon as November, coolest
celebration on earth - Saint Paul Winter Carnival happens in the
last week of January. Among the highlights of this festival, that
began in 1886, is the popular snow and ice sculpture contests, sled races, art walks,
and live music. During February, there's another most awaited festival
- Ely Winter Festival (Feb. 2 - 12) which hosts
The International Snow Sculpting Symposium.
With a voyageur encampment and dogsled rides, the season celebrations continues
with Winter Tracks Festival which features a candlelight ski, bonfires,
snowshoe hikes, sleigh rides and a snowmobile run. Following it is the Polar
Fest in Detroit Lakes which attracts people with its iced tee golf
tournament, amazing wireworks and the freeze-your-buns run.
