So what to watch while you are there?

  • Old Town
As the name suggests, the Old Town is Albuquerque's oldest neighborhood and a must see for the first time visitor. It has galleries, shops, boutiques, eating joints and plenty of artist studios. The plazas are immensely beautifully maintained and have a typical southwest feel, which is what people look for while coming to New Mexico.

  • Balloon Fiesta
Good for passing time if there's nothing much to do. Watch the Kissing Bees, special shape balloons and their air kissing and the cute 'hand-holding' gesture. Website: aibf.org.

  • Sandia Peak
The host to a famous local Ski Resort, Sandia Peak has awesome slopes and bottom shapes. Sandia means 'watermelon' in Spanish. There's a story that tells about local pueblos who raised squash in gardens along the slopes, where rain water would gather. Since the Spanish have no name for squash, they called it watermelon!

  • The Rattlesnake Museum
Located in the heart of Old Town, Rattlesnake museum is visited by many tourists. It is partially a gift shop and partially a museum. There is a minimal entry ticket, amount of which is used to promote conservation of snakes.

  • Biopark and Zoo
Famous of its River of Lights display, the Biopark and Zoo is worth visiting during the holiday season. There's a colorful LED lit-up display that can be a wonderful way to enjoy plenty of moments of joy with your family. Dress up warm for the event as it usually gets a little chilly during the night and it can get annoying trying to keep warm while watching the spectacular displays. Website: www.cabq.gov/biopark.

  • Volcano Park
Spread out over four sections, the volcanoes in the park are believed to have created the geology of Albuquerque thousands of years ago. If you are hiking, stop at the Visitor Center for maps, general overview of what to do and see, and park brochures, although these four districts are quite far enough from each other and most tourists prefer to drive between them. There's something here for just about everyone - any age or ability, with the exception of strollers, wheelchairs, or anyone unable to walk distances of a quarter of mile or so.

  • Downtown
In the middle of the downtown there's the city's Civic Plaza. The plaza is usually quite on the weekend mornings when the office going crowd takes a break from their hectic office schedule. Saturday night however sizzles with fests, theater performances, bands, dance contests, rock festivals, and plenty of other live entertainment events.

  • Parks & Monuments
Petroglyph National Monument is nestled up to the Albuerqueque's resident volcanoes that naturally protects variety of cultural resources including the archeological sites and an estimated 25,000 carved images on canyons, valleys, and hills. Most of these images are pecked and are recognizable people, animals, brands, and crosses. Begin your tour at the tiny but charming visitor center, grab maps for your hike and explorations and start off. For a phenomenally delicious day, take some time out to taste the fresh kiva-baked bread baked by the local tribes and sold outside by the ovens.

  • Jemez Springs
The village of Jemez Springs is at 2 hours drive from Albuquerque. It is in a valley made by the Jemez River. Right before reaching Jemez Springs, you will pass through the edge of Jemez Pueblo. It is an excellent location to take a break and click few photographs.

While Albuquerque is perfectly safe to roam around even without a companion during the day, it is beneficial if you avoid that during nights. The downtown has been made secured by the Downtown Action Team which employs a dozen Downtown Ambassadors roaming the region to help lost tourists, recommend restaurants, and provide safety escorts.
